Why are vinyl windows a better choice than
wood or aluminum?
The
choice of framing material (vinyl, wood or aluminum) is the primary
determining factor in the longevity and energy efficiency of your windows.
Wood windows offer very good thermal qualities but are inclined to
deteriorate and require routine maintenance. Aluminum windows are durable
and last a long time with little maintenance, but do not offer good thermal
qualities because aluminum easily conducts energy. Vinyl windows are your
best choice because they offer thermal properties comparable to wood
combined with the durability and maintenance-free properties of aluminum.

What is the U-value?
The U-value is a measure of the
window's thermal efficiency. The U-value is based on the window's ability to
resist the flow of energy. The lower the U-value, the better the thermal
performance of the window. The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC)
tests and rates windows on a national level. Look for their label when
comparing window efficiency.

What's the warm-edge technology that all the
manufacturers are touting?
Most of today's window sashes are
made from double pane glass, creating an air space between the two panes to
improve the insulating properties of the sash. An edge spacer is used to
keep the panes in place and keep them separated. In many instances, this
edge spacer is made from aluminum. Aluminum conducts energy. The aluminum
contacting the glass reduces the thermal performance of the windows because
it more easily conducts energy.
The windows we provide from Kas-Kel use "Edgewise" technology. This warm
edge technology eliminates glass-to-metal contact by using a single strip of
hot-melt butyl as the spacer. This reduces the energy transfer at the edge
of the glass, which in turn increases the thermal performance of the window.
Other benefits of "Edgewise" technology include a longer lasting insulated
glass unit, longer lasting seals and fog-free windows.

What should I consider when selecting a contractor for my window
installation?
Several factors should be
considered:
-
How long has the contractor been in
business?
-
Does the contractor appear professional?
Is he courteous?
-
Does the contractor have a list of
references? Can the contractor provide you with a list of properties as
samples of his work?
-
Is the contractor insured?
-
Is the contractor a member of the local
Better Business Bureau, trade association or other group that signifies
that he has the qualifications to do the job?

Does the contractor prepare a written
proposal?
When you are ready to have your
installation completed, be sure to get a contract and guarantees in
writing along with an insurance certificate before the work starts.

What is the difference between "replacement"
windows and "new construction" windows?
Replacement windows, whether
vinyl, wood or aluminum, use the existing frame from the current
window. New construction requires that the existing window and frame be
removed entirely. With replacement windows, the windows are made to fit
the opening. With new construction windows, the opening is made to fit the
window.
The advantage of replacement windows is that the windows can be installed
without any change of opening, so there is no wall paper, drywall or
siding work needed, saving you time and money. Also, since all the windows
are made to order, there are no custom size charges.
Similarities to "new construction" prime windows include fully insulated
perimeter for equal energy efficiency, fully insulated glass, and a 100%
maintenance-free exterior.

How do I take measurements?
For quotation purposes, you can
measure from jamb to jamb on the width and from the head jamb to the sill
for the height. It is useful to note whether the existing windows are wood,
aluminum or steel, as well as the style of the window: single hung, double
hung, two or three-lite slider, casement, picture window or awning.

How soon can work be done?
You can usually figure from 4-6
weeks from the time the manufacturer receives the purchase order from the
owner. Specialty configured units, such as cathedral taps, may increase
the lead time.

Will the workers clean up their mess?
Window Specialist will use drop
cloths from the door of the apartment or home to the window work area.
Upon completion, the workers will vacuum the rugs before leaving.

What type of payment options are available?
